Friday 11th June, Westerham Hall – Lecture “Issos in the Iron Age” by Dr. Tamar Hodos
Westerham Hall, 8pm.
Issos is best known as the location of the second major battle that Alexander the Great had against the Persian emperor Darius, in 333 BCE, but there was a settlement on that battlefield plain that had a long history of occupation. Today, the site is known as Kinet-Hoyuk and Dr. Tamar Hodos has spent 15 seasons there excavating the pre-Alexander levels. Her talk will look at how we use archaeology in conjunction with literary references to understand how people lived in the past, focusing particularly on the Iron Age period of Kinet's extensive occupation.
Dr. Hodos is a senior lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Bristol. She has a BA in Classical Studies from Bryn Mawr College (USA), an MA in Classical Archaeology from University College London and a DPhil in Classical Archaeology from the University of Oxford. She has held lecturing roles at British universities for several years; she joined Bristol University in 2000 and became a senior lecturer there in 2006. Her research focuses on the archaeology of the Mediterranean during the Iron Age.
The Westerham Society Diary for 2010 in brief.
